Leak Test
If you are concerned about a leak there is a couple things you can do, one is what we call the leak test. Fill the pool to normal operating level and mark on the skimmer face plate with a piece of tape and then run the pool consistently for either a 12 hour or 24 hour period. Write down the amount of water lost. Then fill the pool to the same spot and then leave the pool off for the same amount of time and note the water loss. If there is substantially more loss when the pool is running there may be a plumbing leak and this can be determined with a pressure test. If it’s the same amount then there is either no leak or there may be a hole in the liner.
You can then do the bucket test if you suspect there is a leak. Take a bucket that is somewhat see-through like the Chinese soup container and place it on the first or second step filled with pool water to the exact same level as the pool. Leave it for a day and see if it evaporates at the same level as the pool.
Most often we find that it is evaporation and not a leak. Hopefully that helps.
